Gulfport Manager Explains
Decibel Levels To Council

Gulfport city manager Tom Brobeil gave a brief workshop to council members on Tuesday evening to help them
better understand the physics involved in noise and how code enforcement deals with complaints. The council had originally planned to have the presentation and a live demonstration in the Waterfront Redevelopment District (WRD) on April 28.

At the last council meeting, the city manager had suggested that the live demonstration in the WRD be deferred until the city council had received the presentation by the city manager. The idea being that the live demonstration may be conducted at some future date in the council believed it to be beneficial. β€œI can provide a live demonstration at any time desired by the council, but it should be understood that provide this demonstration might not be perceived as valid by some observers because it would conducted as a controlled experiment with only one noise source,” said Brobeil. β€œIn the real environment there would be great many noise generators in different locations throughout the WRD.”

The presentation was very technical in nature and included comparisons of different noises played at the same decibel level, but at different wave lengths. No action was taken by council.
