April Teen Council News

Elizabeth Brown-Worthington

It’s time again for another installment of the monthly Teen Council News. We last met on April 19. Five members, three advisors and one visitor attended.

We finalized our plans to change the date for our Teen Council meetings. We have officially moved our meetings to the second Thursday of every month, and we would hold them at city council chambers (2401 53rd Street South). The time – 4:45 p.m. – has not changed. Anyone, teen or adult, may attend the meetings.

On April 28, Teen Council helped out at the Rebuilding Tampa Bay event in Gulfport. We worked alongside So49 at on 13th Avenue South.

We will also start a new award, Outstanding Youth of Gulfport. Gulfport schools and the YNOT youth program will get nomination forms.

We will also deliver Teen Council application forms to YNOT, as we have one regular position and three alternate positions open.

Teen Council will attend the Suncoast League of Cities meeting on Saturday May 1 at the St. Pete Yacht Club.

Gulfport Public Works Department invited Teen Council to help build a Recycling themed Float for the Fourth of July Parade.

Teen Council will also take responsibility for this year’s Horror Movie Night, put on in prior years by the Arts Center.

Three Teen Council members will work with Gulfport’s tech guy to build a Teen Council website.

Finally, we created a video for the Florida League of Cities Youth Video Competition. Visit www.flcities.com to view it.

If you would like to join Teen Council, the only requirements are you must live in Gulfport and be between 13 and 18. You can get applications at MyGulfport.us or pick one up at the Gulfport Recreation Center (5730 Shore Boulevard South). We need one regular member and three alternates. Contact Marivel Gutierrez (893-1068) at the Recreation Center for more information.

Teen Council will meet again on May 10 at 4:45 p.m. in City Council Chambers.
