August Teen Council News

Happy summer from your Gulfport Teen Council! We hope everyone’s enjoying their summer and staying cool. So far this summer, Teen Council hasn’t had any meetings because with summer vacations and things like that many members have been unable to attend. Instead I’ll bring you up-to-date on some of the things going on with Teen Council. We recently got brighter new shirts that are like an electric blue. They read “Gulfport Teen Council” on the front and on the back they read, “Ask not what your city can do for you; ask what you can do for your city.”

On June 30, the Teen Council held our first Teen Dance in the Gulfport Recreation Center. We did okay for our first time, but we hope to keep trying until it’s the best that it can be! We also had a table set up in front of La Cote Basque on the Fourth of July selling little novelties and things like sunglasses and hats. Teen Council also rode in the parade on the Fourth, on a float made of all recycled materials, and we helped create it! We walked with Councilman Dan Liedtke and Public Works Department representative Rachel Cataldo. We also handed out beads and fliers about recycling! We will attend the upcoming Florida League of Cities (FLOC) conference in Hollywood, Florida on August 24 and 25. We placed second in the FLOC video contest recently and won five free tickets to the conference where we will be presenting our video as a council.

This month I will highlight another member of teen council. I’m not randomly choosing who I highlight each month; I’m going in order of position. I’ve written about the president and the vice president; next is secretary, which just so happens to be me!

Name: Elizabeth Brown-Worthington

Position on Teen Council: Secretary

School: Boca Ciega High School Fundamental Program

How long I’ve been on Teen Council: One year

Why I joined Teen Council: I’ve always been interested in government and I’ve always been active in the city anyway.  I thought it would be a good way to get a more in depth view of government and how it works.

What I would like to accomplish while on Teen Council: I would like to see Teen Council work more with the city and the teens.  I want to see more teens coming to the meetings, whether on the council or not, and bring their ideas up to us.  We’re here to speak for them, and take their ideas and grow on them.  I also would like to try to get all teen council members CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) Certified like I am so maybe we could start a Teen CERT.

Events I would like to start for teens: I would like to do a mixer kind of thing every couple of months where teens can come, and just hang out, meet new people, get out of the house and enjoy themselves!

Favorite City Event: The Gulfport Birthday Bash.

Favorite thing about Gulfport: I love the people, besides the fact that one third of them are relatives, they’re all so friendly and conversational.  I love the fact that they all have their different stories and backgrounds but everyone can come together at an event and enjoy themselves and get along!  I love how one way or another, everybody knows everybody. I also love how eclectic and quirky Gulfport is. Keep Gulfport Weird!
