Beach Commission Votes for Sheriff

ST. PETE BEACH – Last Tuesday night, St. Pete Beach voted unanimously to outsource its police department. This vote comes on the heels of a voter referendum in which the majority of beach voters gave the approval to do so.

The Pinellas County Sheriff, led by Sheriff Bob Gualtieri, will provide police services for the city. The commissioners approved a contract for just over $1.5 million that will start the morning of January 6 and expire at the end of the fiscal year (September 30.)

The day after the vote, the Sheriff’s office inventoried the city’s inventory and deemed the equipment sufficient to eliminate the $600,000 start-up cost associated with assuming responsibility for policing St. Pete Beach.
