Q: Why does Gulfport not permit backyard beekeeping and what needs to happen to change that? - Linda Burke
A: According to city code, section 12.2, the city does not allow “Any condition which provides, or could provide, harborage for rats, mice, snakes, insects or other vermin.” This includes bees. Code enforcement reports several complaints a year about bees. To allow people to keep hives, city manager Jim O’Reilly says, the council would have to approve an ordinance specifically permit beekeeping.
