Friday morning, friends came to say goodbye to Sue Frank, one of the visionaries who helped found the Gulfport Multipurpose Senior Center Foundation and, until this week, the head of the Gulfport Senior Center. Sue retired Friday, after 21 years of helping Gulfport’s seniors.

Sue, former director Sarah Peel, and Jane Ogilvie founded the Gulfport Multipurpose Senior Center Foundation in 2002.

“My heart is warmed,” Sue told the crowd of seniors, friends, and city staff gathered at a retirement reception Friday morning. She thanked everyone who helped build the Center. “It's never one person. It's the wonderful staff, the wonderful volunteers. I'm lucky to be a part of it.”

“The spirit of giving abounds here,” Mayor Mike Yakes agreed. "Sue’s commitment to the foundation has been unwavering.”

He told Sue that he hoped she would be able to “relax and care about Sue, because you have cared about all of us.”

“Fun! Adventure! Travel!” Sue joked when asked her plans for retirement.

City Manager Jim O’Reilly chose Gail Biron, former Technical Events Coordinator, to fill Sue’s shoes as Social Services Supervisor.

“Gail will accept any project with open arms and follow it through to the end,” Bob Williams, Gail’s supervisor, said. “She also comes up with great ideas. She will help in promoting our Multi Purpose Center into ‘Senior Recreation/Cultural Center’. She has a good working relationship with staff and the transition will be smooth.”

Sue agreed Friday.

“We love Gail, and everything is going to be great,” she told the group gathered to give her a proper send-off.

“My heart has always been in Gulfport and it always will be,” Gail told the crowd. “I promise to give you my very best in the years to come.”
