Bright Future for Corey

Mayor Steve McFarlin and his daughter Molly chat with residents about Corey Avenue’s bright future at Thursday night’s lighting ceremony. C

Even though the lights went on just before Christmas, the warm lights adorning the outline of Corey rooftops will stay lit all year long. Thursday night the Corey Avenue Business Association and businesses joined together in the latest, brightest effort to draw more attention downtown.

The lighting ceremony took place in front of Corey Corners, and many of the shops stayed open late to accommodate the small crowd milling about downtown.

City manager Mike Bonfield attended, as did Commissioners Lorraine Huhn and Jim Parent, Vice Mayor Marvin Shavlan, and Mayor Steve McFarlin. City officials, elected and hired alike, spoke with optimism about the future of downtown. Mayor McFarlin told the Gabber he hoped the lights helped bring the quaint downtown into focus for locals and visitors alike.

“I think it’s a new day down there... puts a lot of emphasis back on the street that we’ve just somewhat taken for granted,” Mayor Steve McFarlin said.
