Crosswalks on Gulf Boulevard

Q: Why do some crosswalks on Gulf Boulevard flash all the time while others only flash when people cross?

A: Because of engineers, according to Public Works Director Steve Hallock.

“The Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices provides guidelines but gives discretion to the engineer,” he says. “So two different engineers may have two different opinions on what the safest option is.”

There’s good news, though: the state approved “standardized pedestrian Rectangular Rapid Flash Beacons (RRFB)” on all of Gulf Boulevard, so soon they will all be the same up and down Pinellas County beaches – all the cities must sign the agreements to maintain the beacons and then the state will schedule installation.
