Early Saturday morning, the Horse and Jockey suffered a kitchen fire. The fire damaged the kitchen but not the dining area, and while no one could say what caused the fire or how soon the British Pub could reopen, owner Lea Doyle stressed that the restaurant would rebuild.
The morning after the fire, the owners and a group of employees stayed on hand to oversee the disaster recovery company as it boxed tea pots and dinnerware.
Mr. Doyle also thanked the community for its support, saying that people had come by the day of the fire offering to help clean up.
The Gulfport Area Chamber of Commerce started collecting money Saturday afternoon to help offset the Horse and Jockey’s lost revenue. The fire happened on what the owners say should have been one of their busiest weekends of the year – St. Patrick’s Day. Drop off donations at the Gulfport Area Chamber of Commerce offices at 4926 Gulfport Boulevard.
“We’re asking folks that would have spent money there to donate it to the cause and we'll make sure they get it,” Chamber President Lori Rosso said.
The Horse and Jockey recently remodeled. Mr. Doyle promised that the restaurant would have a large grand-reopening party – “a big one!” he said – when they reopen.
