Gulfport and Reclaimed Water

Q: Why can't the city get reclaimed water for the residents? I would like a choice of providers.
–John Poloney, via Facebook

A: Because there isn’t enough to go around, and Gulfport depends on St. Petersburg for its water. Consider this: it takes four households using potable (drinking) water to create enough reclaimed water for one home.
The city of Gulfport buys water wholesale from the city of St. Petersburg, and St. Petersburg, Gulfport City Manager Jim O’Reilly says, doesn’t have “the capacity or volume” to extend its reclaimed water into Gulfport. On top of that, Gulfport doesn’t have the infrastructure (distribution pipes and pumps) to offer residents and businesses reclaimed water.
