Gulfport Police Collect Painkillers, Other Unwanted Drugs

At Saturday’s Operation Medicine Cabinet, held in the Walgreens parking lot, the Gulfport Police Department collected 14 boxes of unwanted or unneeded medications. According to Lieutenant Joshua Stone, who oversaw the collection of medicines, people returned medicines ranging from old antibiotics to strong painkillers such as Oxycontin.

Collections such as these serve a dual purpose: they keep pharmaceuticals out of the water supply (a result of people washing medicine down the drain or flushing unwanted tablets) as well as keeping medicines away from children of people who may use the medicine other than as intended.
