Q: How many tickets has the city issued for people violating the smoking ban on Gulfport beach?
A: According to police chief Rob Vincent, none, although when an officer stopped one smoker to ask him extinguish his cigarette, the officer discovered that the smoker had an outstanding warrant on another charge. Officers arrested the smoker for the warrant, not for smoking.
Additionally, Chief Vincent says, officers will ask people to put out their cigarettes instead of ticketing smokers until such time as the city puts up appropriate signage alerting people to the city’s laws about smoking on the beach.
