For years, former Gulfport mayor, Mike Yakes, tried to light the Christmas tree in Clymer Park, and every year he found himself unable to do so without help from some of the youngest Gulfportians. Monday night Gulfport’s new mayor, Sam Henderson, tried to light the tree only to discover that he, too, lacked the power to launch Gulfport into the Christmas season without help from Gulfport’s kids.
Fortunately for Mayor Henderson, there was no shortage of children on hand at the tree lighting and when he asked for volunteers he found no shortage of kids to help flip the switch on the lights.
Instead of buying a fresh tree or using an artificial one, Gulfport decorates a live cedar tree in Clymer Park. After the annual lighting of the tree, Gulfport’s Tot Time performs. Santa usually interrupts their song with a splashy arrival in a fire truck. This year was no exception, and Santa arrived just as the kids finished their songs.
