May Teen Council News

Hello again from your Teen Council Secretary! Our last meeting took place on May 10 and it was our first meeting in Gulfport City Hall Council Chambers! I sat in City Clerk Lesley Demuth’s seat; our president sat in Mayor Mike Yakes’ seat, and the rest of the members on either side of the president. We even had a small audience including Council Member Dan Liedtke!

We began by discussing the Suncoast League of Cities Conference we attended; we talked about the interesting things we learned. Next we talked about our up-and-coming website. We decided that we are going to build as much of the website ourselves as possible. We also discussed the idea of including a calendar on our website that will show all city events. In addition, the idea of starting a scholarship program was brought up – we discussed the requirements and things but no vote or motion was made. The meeting lasted almost an hour

This month, I will be highlighting another Teen Council Member.

Name: Michael Wos.
Position on Teen Council: Vice President.
School: Lakewood High School Center for Advanced Technologies (CAT) Program.
How long he’s been on Teen Council: Two Years.
Why he joined Teen Council: He wanted to help his community and learn how he can use leadership skills to benefit our city.
What he would like to accomplish while on Teen Council: He wants to get the youth in Gulfport to be more connected and create more opportunities for them.

Favorite Thing about Gulfport: Michael likes the safety and diversity of it.

Don’t forget that Teen Council has a Teen Dance coming up on June 30 at the Gulfport Recreation Center for people between the ages of 13 and 17. We will meet again on June 14 at 4:45 p.m. at Gulfport City Hall Council Chambers. Anyone may attend our meetings. If you would like to join Teen Council, the only requirements are you must be from 13 and 18 years old and you must live in Gulfport.
