New Fitness Equipment For Community Center

ST. PETE BEACH — Coming soon to the gym at the city’s community center: two new treadmills and two new recumbent bicycles. The city commission approved spending just over $16,000 for two new Precor treadmills and two new recumbent bicycles, all commercial-grade equipment rather than treadmills and bikes designed for home use.

“We’re keeping the current equipment [and] we’re inheriting the equipment the police had,” Recreation Director Jennifer McMahon said, explaining that the police equipment consists of strength-training equipment, including a bench press and a Smith machine. The city gym will expand into part of the Upham room in the next week.

According to McMahon, between 15 and 20 people use the fitness equipment daily, a number she expects to increase with the city’s participation in the Silver Sneakers program.

“It’s been increasing just in the last week,” McMahon said “and hopefully more with the addition of the new equipment and the expansion, we hope to gain more.”
