Open (Election) Season on St. Pete Beach

This year three seats come up for election on St. Pete Beach: District One, District Three, and the Mayor’s seat. Lorraine Huhn, Marvin Shavlan, and Mayor Steve McFarland occupy those seats, respectively.

While the official qualification period doesn’t start until noon on Monday, December 9, several residents have paid for candidate guidebooks. Below we list who purchased a book; St. Pete Beach City Clerk Rebecca Haynes cautions that although a person paid for a book, that does not mean they intend to run. Anyone can buy a book and give it to anyone else.

The list below shows who, at press time Wednesday, paid for a book and the district in which they live (Except for Lorraine Huhn and McFarlin, who have both declared their intended seat). Because the mayor’s seat is up for election, some of the people who live in District Three may intend to run for mayor. If a potential candidate lives in neither District One or Three, readers may extrapolate that they (or the person for whom they purchased the book) intend to run for mayor.

 From the city’s web site:

A candidate for position of City Commissioner must be a full-time resident of the district from which he or she seeks office or, if for the position of Mayor-Commissioner, a full-time resident of the City of St. Pete Beach.

A candidate may announce his or her candidacy at any time; however, before accepting any contributions, making any expenditures, or obtaining any petition signatures, the candidate must file an Appointment of Campaign Treasurer and Designation of Depository Form (Form DS-DE 9) with the City Clerk.

Candidate Guidebooks are available at the Office of the City Clerk, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; the cost is $10.00.  Please contact Rebecca Haynes at 363-9220 to schedule an appointment to obtain a guidebook and discuss filing procedures.
