Gulfport city council shortened the time between residents setting large items on the curb and the city removing it and charging for bulk item removal.
While city staff says they’d still prefer customers call and request bulk pickups, staff now has the legal backing to pick up larger (over six feet by three feet) items placed curbside larger within three days. Previously, staff had to wait seven days before removing the trash if the homeowner had not called and requested a special collection.
“I’m a little confused how you’re going to manage the measurement of three days,” resident Margarete Tober asked. City manager Jim O’Reilly explained that staff now notes piles as they drive by.
“Drivers have been instructed now to pick up everything,” O’Reilly said.
“To me, to encumber the sanitation workers with administrative work then what it would cost you to just go around and pick up the trash,” Tober said.
