Spectacular Senior for August: Arlene Wilbur

Every month, the Gulfport Multipurpose Senior Center elects a senior citizen of the month. The Gabber finds out more about what makes these distinguished men and ladies so spectacular.

Arlene Wilbur, 95

Hometown? Exeter, New Hampshire

Current City? Gulfport

When did you move to the area? 1974

What was your career? Manufacturing, retail and healthcare

Family? I have five children and I am widowed, but I do have a special person in my life. His name is Arda. I have six grandchildren and a slew of great grandchildren.

What do you consider your "moment"?

I have so many moments that are special to me, but back in my sixties my husband and I kept watch at a private fishing club in Northern Quebec. We stayed in a camp in the woods in the summer. They named a lake after me, Lake Irene, and another lake after my husband, Lake Wilbur. The Club is no longer there, but I have good memories of being out in the woods and fishing for Northern Pike. During that time, I dabbled in taking piano lessons. As I hit my eighties, I have taken lessons and I am still playing today. I have had five recitals. You are never to old to learn. I still enjoy new experiences today.

What advice would you give to young people starting out on their own?
Have faith in yourself and that you can do anything you put your mind to.
