Betty Staebell, 84
Hometown: Bennington Center, New York
Current Home: St. Petersburg, 32 years
Career: Music teacher, church musician, and she’s painted for six decades.
Family: She will celebrate her 67th anniversary in June. She had two children, although she lost her daughter to cancer when she was 42. She has four grandchildren and one great grandson.
What do you consider your best moment?
“Painting, probably. I was in the Mrs. America contest. I was a professional model. I studied music and art. Now I’m a volunteer here, since 1984.”
What advice would you give young people starting out on their own?
“Try to pursue your goal. It doesn’t always work in the beginning – just keep working at it. Be happy in your life and your marriage. Work things out. Don’t give up.”
