St. Pete Beach Boat Docks

Q: Several years ago the city voters defeated a referendum that would have allowed a marina to be built at the city property north of the Corey Causeway. Now I see (St. Pete Beach is) saying that the city will build docks at the Rec Center property, in violation of that referendum. Does the city have to have another referendum to build these docks (marina)? - George Moore, via e-mail

A: According to St. Pete Beach city manager Mike Bonfield, “I believe the referendum... was held over 20 years ago.” At that time, he explains, the city did not have a charter requirement to hold such a public referendum. As such, “the outcome has no bearing on future decisions relating to the use of this property.”
He adds that the city still does not have a charter-ordered referendum requirement for the proposed docks.
