Shrimp Boil at the Gulfport Lions Club
The Gulfport Lions Club will hold their third Shrimp Boil on Saturday, March 13 from 4-8 p.m. at their den at 4630 Tifton Drive S. in Gulfport (right behind the Marina). Rain or Shine.
The menu features a great supply of fresh, peel and eat shrimp, homemade hushpuppies and cole slaw, baked beans, cocktail sauce, coffee and iced tea and dessert. A generous 1/2 pound (weighed before cooking) serving for everyone at a cost of $8 per person, Additional shrimp can be purchased at $4 per 1/2 pound. This is not an all you can eat dinner for a one time cost (as most of their events are). Children under 10 years of age are half price. You are welcome to bring your favorite beverage as we cannot sell beer or wine.
Plenty of tickets will be available at the door, or contact any of your Lion friends. This is a Gulfport Lions Activities Project, with all of the net proceeds generated to be allocated to their community outreach programs, especially Sight First activities, as are all of their fund-raiser projects.

Community Band to Perform Free Concert
Max Millspaugh, Musical Director of the South Pasadena Community Band has announced the title and theme of the March 11 concert. “We will build our program around images that spring from the sounds of music. That is the concert title, as a matter of fact, “Images.” This concert is going to be a lot of fun. It will include a varied selection of music and the audience will have an evening of good music and light hearted entertainment.”
The concert is free to the public and will be held in the Boca Ciega High School auditorium located at 924 58 Street S. in St. Petersburg. The facility has adequate free parking in front of the school and adjacent to the auditorium and is handicap accessible. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m.
Mr. Millspaugh said “To whet the appetite for this interesting evening of music and fun, I will mention a couple of the selections on the concert. “Gillette Look Sharp”, “Music to Watch Girls By”, and a famous David Rose tune (you will have to come to hear which one) will be in the program as well as some familiar marches and a few surprises. We will create some images in the mind with the strains of familiar music. We look forward to seeing our regular audience members and hopefully some new faces,” he concluded.

Citizens Weigh in on County Budget
The Pinellas County Commission hosted 97 citizens at the first of three Public Budget Meetings on March 3 at Palm Harbor University High School. The meeting was the first in a series of outreach efforts, during which commissioners hope to receive feedback from citizens about the budget. The county is looking at a $60 million reduction in the fiscal year 2011 budget, which begins Oct. 1, 2010.
The next Public Budget Meeting is scheduled for Thursday, March 11, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., at Osceola High School, 9751 98 Street N., Seminole.The third Public Budget Meeting will be on Thursday, March 18, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., at Gibbs High School, 850 34 Street S., St. Petersburg.
The Public Budget Meetings are designed to give residents a chance to familiarize themselves with the budget process. All attendees will be given a questionnaire asking about priority programs and services. They can speak to the staff in charge of the program areas that are under the purview of the County Commission, and they can spend time with the commissioners and the county administrator. During the latter part of the evening, time will be allocated to citizens wishing to publicly address the commissioners, and the questionnaires will be collected.
An eTownHall meeting is also planned for the convenience of all residents on Monday, March 15, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The blog will open at 9 a.m. Sunday, March 14, and will continue to be open until the end of the event, at 8 p.m. Monday.
As part of the eTownHall meeting, residents can blog questions to the commissioners, which will be answered and broadcasted live on the website during the eTownHall meeting. The meeting can also be viewed via live streaming video on www.pinellascounty.org or on the PCC-TV cable channels (Bright House 622, Knology 18 and Verizon 44).
Citizens can receive a reminder about the eTownHall by signing up on the website. The link is available on www.pinellascounty.org.

Exhibits Pays Tribute to Lowell MacCartney
A special memorial tribute exhibition of the works of art of the late Lowell MacCartney, a longtime member of the Art Guild of Treasure Island, will be on display through March 31 at the Treasure Island City Hall auditorium, 120 108 Avenue. The public is invited to this free event which pays tribute to one of Florida’s most distinguished artists and includes a special reception with refreshments on Saturday, March 13 at 1 p.m. A brief Art Guild meeting, at which awards will be presented to the winners in the current art show, will precede the tribute. Jewish Genealogical Society to Hold Seminar
The Jewish Genealogical Society of Tampa Bay concludes the two-session seminar entitled: “The JGSTB 2010 Guide to Jewish Genealogy Research: A Foundation for Beginners and an Update for Experienced Researchers” on March 14 at 2 p.m. at Gulf Coast Jewish Family Services, 14041 Icot Blvd. in Clearwater. Registration will be at 1:30 p.m. A seminar booklet summarizing all the material to be presented will be provided.
This seminar focuses on developing the proper approaches and applying the necessary tools, techniques and short cuts to most effectively connect you with your ancestors in the old country. Recently developed Internet resources as well as local non-internet resources will be emphasized to enable the beginner to discover his or her family history as well as facilitate the experienced researcher in resolving “brick wall” problems.
The course is free to current paid-up members of the Jewish Genealogical Society of Tampa Bay. A one-year family membership will be included in the $25 course fee for non-members. An additional $10 fee will be charged for seminar materials to defray printing costs, but only one booklet will be needed per couple or family. Annual membership in the Jewish Genealogical Society of Tampa Bay is $25 per individual or family.
Anyone interested in learning how to do Jewish genealogical research is invited to attend. Early registration is recommended so that sufficient copies of the printed booklet and handouts will be available.

The St. Petersburg Sail and Power Squadron will present the United States Power Squadrons Seminar Series program, “Using GPS”, on Wednesday, March 17. Carol Hasbrouck, successful businesswoman and owner of “Intentional Living…Live Your Life on Purpose” will be the speaker for the March 18 BPW meeting. Gulf Beaches Historical Museum will celebrate its anniversary month on Saturday, March 20 from

Clam Bayou Cleanup
The City of Gulfport will be hosting the bi-annual Spring Florida Coastal Cleanup on Saturday, March 20 from 9 a.m. to noon at Clam Bayou Nature Park (49th St. S. to 29th Ave. S. east to Miriam St.) in Gulfport. People with non-motorized vessels (kayaks and canoes) as well as people traveling via land based are encouraged to sign up at the Clam Bayou the day of the event for an enjoyable day while lending a hand to help keep the Bayou clean.

Guardian ad Litem Training
The next training to become a Guardian ad Litem will be April 10 to May 8, Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for five weeks at Pasadena Community Church, 227 70 Street S. in St. Petersburg. There will be a special 30 minute orientation on Tuesday March 23 at 7 p.m. in room 2B at the Church’s Life Enrichment Center.
As a Guardian ad Litem, you advocate in court and the child welfare system for abused, abandoned or neglected children and teens. The average time needed is six to eight hours a month.
The Guardian ad Litem visits the child every month, becomes familiar with the child’s case and makes recommendations to the court to help ensure the child has a safe, caring and stable environment.

Spaghetti Luncheon to Benefit Relay for Life

Transportation Fair at the Senior Center
Most seniors do not know that there are available door to door transportation services to places like their doctor’s office or the local grocery store for a reasonable price. The Transportation Fair on Wednesday, March 24 at 1:30 p.m. at the Gulfport Senior Center, 5501 27 Avenue S., will educate seniors on different transportation options.
Guest speaker, Sue Samson from the Area Agency on Aging of Pasco-Pinellas, Inc. will address transportation issues pertaining to seniors. Ms. Samson has much expertise in this area and will shed light on the importance of knowing when it’s time to consider other transportation alternatives.
Area transportation vendors will also be on hand to share specifics about their services. Vendors include the City of Gulfport GEMS program, PSTA, DART, Neighborly Care Network, EZ Ride, Metropolitan Transportation Organization, Wheelchair Transport, etc. Light refreshments will be provided.

Gulfport Springfest
The 15th Annual Gulfport Springfest Street Festival celebration is planned for Saturday, March 27 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. along historic Beach Boulevard. The event is co-produced by the Gulfport Chamber of Commerce and the City of Gulfport. Proceeds to benefit Charities of Gulfport Chamber of Commerce. Bring the whole family, a few friends or a whole crew to enjoy the festivities. The event will host an array of food, art and craft vendors as well as the Bonnet Parade & Hat Contest.
Contest participants are encouraged to create their own hat masterpieces and attend the festivities with simple materials and some creativity. Hats can be fancy, fashionable, weird, cartooned, kitschy or themed. Any materials may be used. There is only one rule - your chapeau must fit over your head! Whether you aspire to become the next great hat designer or are seeking to win the contest, be sure to add lots of embellishments, doo-dads, and goo-gas for the chance to become the judges’ champion. Participants will be judged during the parade at 4 p.m. and the winners will be announced immediately following.
Prizes will be given in the following categories: Judges’ Favorite, Biggest Hat, Most Creative, Best Pet Hat and “Seriously?”. Prizes will include donated items or gift certificates from area merchants.
A children’s area will provide activities for the kids. Additionally, other venues downtown such as the Art Village Courtyard will also feature music and live glass blowing demonstrations at the Industrial Arts Center.
The Spring Fest event is free to the public and free parking is available in and around downtown and the City’s historic trolley will offer free rides giving access to more remote parking locations.
