Grant Could See Gulfport Police Move to 49th Street

“What we’re looking at is the opportunity to expand the use of the Neighborhood Center,” Interim City Manager Jim O’Reilly told council as he explained how the Community Development Block Grant would help 49th Street South area residents feel safer.
The city will apply for a grant to help fund the police department’s move from the Art District to the 49th Street Neighborhood Center.
“I want to strongly support this concept, not because 49th Street is crime-ridden or anything like that,” Bob Newcomb said of the grant. “You’re giving a sense of security to financial people there.”
“I think it’s a great opportunity for the city to build not only a police complex but an emergency operations center for future use,” Vice-mayor Bob Worthington said. Worthington works with CERT, the emergency response team that would be first on the scene in the event of a natural disaster in Gulfport.S
