Gulfport Government May Go Greener

GULFPORT— Rick Kriseman presented the Local Government Energy Retrofit Program (LGERP). Kriseman told Gulfport City Council the program would reduce energy costs and greenhouse gas emissions. The program would require a loan to the city. Kriseman admitted the loan payments could come due before a government completed the retrofit.
“We are a ‘pay-as-you-go’ city,” Mayor Mike Yakes told Kriseman.
The program could potentially save the city money with energy-efficient upgrades and water-conserving measures. The city would use the money saved with the retrofit to pay for the retrofit.
Council asked Interim City Manager Jim O’Reilly to get more details.
