Summer Heats Up in Gulfport

Summer Heats Up in Gulfport

In a complement to the annual SoStudio tour over the Memorial Day weekend, the Industrial Arts Center of Gulfport (IACG) held a membership and fundraising drive. The weekend-long event included “celebrity glass blowing”, including a “Mayor’s Cup” blown by Gulfport mayor Sam Henderson (with help from resident artist Owen Pach). The city manager, Jim O’Reilly, and Gulfport Merchant’s Association President Mike McCue also tried their hand at the hot, delicate craft. The “celebrities” donated their pieces to the IACG, which the nonprofit then raffled. The IACG also had a silent auction.

Resident Artist Owen Pach also picked people out of the crowd to try their hand at glass work, and well-known glass caster Susan Gott demoed her work and donated two pieces to the center. Other artists gave demonstrations as well.

Mike Hanson, studio coordinator, Jeff Green, studio tech, Emma McMahon, silent auction coordinator, and volunteer Kenny Toombs coordinated the event. The IACG needs more volunteers like these people; to help out, please call Owen Pach at 320-4051. Memberships start at $75 a year, which includes one free “make-your-own” piece; other memberships offer more benefits.
